Meet Me in St. Louis?

Does anyone know anything about whether St. Louis is a nice place to live? We are likely to end up in Richmond again after going through this law school hiring and medical residency thing, although we may stay here in the Philadelphia area as well. The latest twist is a possibility of heading out to Washington University in St. Louis. I don't see why we'd end up falling that way, although I'm sure the cost of living is good, and many people assume I'm from the Midwest anyhow, so I might as well be.

I'll tell you what I love about St. Louis. We drive right through it to visit my parents!

Seriously, we know someone who grew up in St. Louis and went to Washington University and would be happy to pass along his name if you'd like to talk with him. (He's in Boston now.)

Just in case you misunderstood, if you move to St. Louis we'll get to see you a lot more.

Now that I think about it, it might sway the BLD gathering places more to the Midwest, which can only be good for us.

I'll let you know if I think of any reasons that moving there would be good for you (other than seeing more of us, of course).

The St. Louis Cardinals have a very passionate fan base, and I will be more likely to come visit you if I have the opportunity to attend a Cardinals game as opposed to a Phillies one. Also, even though the Royals are terrible, I would also like to visit the Papsdorfs and see one of those games.

R-I-C-H-M-O-N-D! My mom will babysit your kids. Truly.

oh wait--I just realized I was urging you to move further away from us.

Walsho, the midwest is the way to go. I just filled up my car for $20 ($1.47/gallon), and you can buy a nice house for $125,000 and practically a mansion for $200K. (Admittedly that's Wichita, not St. Louis, but still...)

And Hursty, while I'd be game for the Royals why not mix a little business with pleasure and go watch a game coached by your man Mangino. Admittedly this year wasn't quite as good as last year, but he is still the first Kansas coach to take teams to back-to-back bowl games since... pretty much ever. Besides, Lawrence is a little closer than Royal's Stadium and the team we'd be rooting for could possibly win.

This is crazy--WashU is quite possibly my first choice. My mentor really thinks that I should seriously consider it. It would be awesome to work in the same hospital(s) as Shan!

By the way, I'm interviewing there on Jan 7 (any chance that corresponds too?)

Wow . . . this is interesting. There are some strong reasons for the midwest here. Perhaps I ought to have been from there, even though I'm not. But who can beat $1.47/gallon?

Reality is, though, that many of these messages are misguided. If you wish to influence where we will live, direct your message to Shannon.

oh, yes, one more thing, since Shannon may not be checking the comments section of this St. Louis post . . . your best bet is direct email: sjwalshmd@gmail.com

Apart from the cheap gas, there's something else unique that the midwest can offer a person such as yourself: the chance to feel like a liberal. I wouldn't have thought it possible but the more student papers I read the more I realize I'm not really the right wing nut job I always thought I was; my students though.... After spending so long out east it's been refreshing to approach a lot of the old political and theological arguments from the opposite perspective. Keeps the brain young (at least when you're not cursing Rush or Sean Hannity).

Josh, that is the best comment I have read in years. Bless you.

Kevin, St. Louis can't possibly be as good as Ottumwa, Iowa, but in a pinch, it will do. There are few better places to drive through to be back in touch with your inner U.S. agricultural -manufacturing - beer brewing- self. Someone once told me that God lives on the top floor of the AB building. AB stands for Anheuser Busch, in case you hadn't figured that out. Now it's owned by the Belgians, so it can only go down hill, but if you get there quickly you might be able to enjoy some of the good ol' days.

belgian beer is way better than anything made by anheuser busch (sorry lincoln), so i'm thinking that it might end up being an improvement.

josh, sorry this astute post has already supplanted your previous one as the best comment amanda has read in years.

One of my best friends went to med school at Wash U. She really enjoyed the school and the city. I can give you her email if you'd like.

Seriously, you people are delusional. We are not moving to St. Louis.

Shannon, there's an infamous story in my family about my parents driving through endless prairies years before my birth and swearing they would never live in Kansas.

Amanda needs to read more.

And gas is only $1.63 in New Jersey, which isn't bad.

And I've been to McPherson, Kansas, which is way less metropolitan than Wichita.

And I think you should stay in Philly, but I know my pleas fall on deaf ears.

kevin, it appears you should run these posts by your wife before soliciting advice about something she has no interest in.

and i owe you a phone call. since i am still coaching for some reason, i go to bed early now because i have to get up at 5:30. i imagine in a few months, though, getting up at 5:30 will be like sleeping in.

Kristin said...

Yes, you imagine correctly. 5:30 will be a dream.
