Newest BLD Member

Not sure how far the news traveled...

Please welcome Hollis Merrill Fasani to the BLD! Mom and baby are both doing great. Dad has to go back to work tomorrow so we'll see if Mom's status has changed tomorrow night.

As much as Jaya looks like a Fasani, this one looks like a Lynch. Crazy genetics.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving BLD! Here's to your families, your health, and your friendship. Salud!

Be safe if you're traveling. Be patient if you're hosting. On second thought...

Be patient if you're traveling. Be safe if you're hosting. You get the idea.

I have an ROUS in my compost bin

He is a possum.

I tried to chase him out with a shovel, but he just... well... he played possum.

Help for Lincoln

Lincoln, I thought you might need some pointers in speech-making from one of the great up-and-coming politicians Ohio has to offer.  I would watch all 6 minutes if you have time.  You'll probably want to take notes.

Beavis & Butthead

So I'm talking with Ernest today about new spirits brands and the conversation referenced the quality perception of Canadian products. The reference sparked a diversion to Southpark, which in turn led to references to Beavis & Butthead. We agreed that watching Beavis & Butthead does actually make you more stupid.

I refrained from mentioning that Josh and I spent an entire weekend painting the Moose double while quoting Beavis & Butthead nonstop.

Ahh, good times. Good times.

Good stuff that Josh should post a comment on the day I was thinking of him at work.

Parenting is easy when they can all walk

Last time we had a 16 month-old and Betsy wasn't pregnant, it was because she had just given birth to Wesley. I have to say it's nice to get sevenish hours of sleep every night and to only contend with one nap per day. Any suggestions as to what we can do with all our new-found free time?

BLD Sig Eps

Sorry to hijack the blog, but I heard that no one responded to Hasenkamp's email. Just in case you missed the message, there's a fundraising effort going on for the new house being built. Check out the photos of the demolition and building at: feed://sigepnewhouse.tumblr.com/rss. Anyway, Russ Stidolph is matching all 97, 98, and 99 donations. See the text below:

Dear SigEps from ’97, ’98 and ’99,

As some of you are aware, Zeuss, our beloved House Dog to SigEp during your tenure on campus, recently passed away this past May after 15 wonderful years. To memorialize Zeuss and the spirit and era of the house he symbolized your fraternity brother, Russ Stidolph, is proposing to make a significant contribution to SigEp in his honor to support the Campaign to build the new chapter house. To support the effort and to help memorialize Zeuss, and your love of SigEp, now is your chance to take up the challenge of raising the funds to name the Presidents’ Suite in the new chapter house in memory of Zeuss.

Russ is issuing a challenge pledge of $20,000 to all members of the SigEp classes of ’97, ’98 and ’99. What that means is that Russ will match, dollar-for-dollar, every pledge from members of those three classes, a maximum from $2,000 from each individual, and a total from all three classes of up to $20,000.

If you step up and meet Russ’ challenge, not only will the President’s Room be named for Zeus, but the Campaign will go over the $800,000 mark in pledges!

Furthermore, if any class raises $15,000 or more as a group, they will be able to name one of the singles on behalf of the class. This is a separate challenge that is being made by the classes of ’60, ’05, ’10, ’11 and ’12 – all of which have already pledged enough to name a room! So the competition is on – and you have several incentives to make your pledge.

To accept Russ’ challenge, just complete the attached pledge card and return it either by mail or email. Pledges can be spread over a period of up to five years; can be fulfilled by direct payment or credit card; and can be set up for automatic periodic payment directly from your bank account or credit card. And pledges to the Campaign for SigEp at Dartmouth are tax deductible.

Yours,

Bob Wetzel ‘76

Chairman, The Campaign for SigEp at Dartmouth

In Honor of LeBron's Skipping Town - GLBC Does Cleveland Proud!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

This World Champion Won’t Leave Cleveland!
GLBC brews limited release, pub exclusive “Quitness”

July 13, 2010--CLEVELAND, OHIO--Great Lakes Brewing Company (GLBC), the award-winning craft brewer of lagers and ales and recipient of multiple world champion titles, announces the limited release of its new pub exclusive “Quitness”.  “Quitness”, named for obvious reasons given the recent “Decision”, is a cask conditioned, dry hopped India Pale Ale that is sure to be as bitter as the mood of Cleveland these days!  “Connecting to our city, our fans and our community has made Great Lakes Brewing Company what it is today.  Making lemonade out of lemons comes naturally as evidenced by some of our other beers like the Burning River Pale Ale and Blackout Stout.  Rest assured Cleveland – GLBC isn’t going anywhere and we will continue to win world [beer] championships,” comments Patrick Conway, co-owner of GLBC.

“Quitness” is slated for GLBC training camp (the Brewpub that is) starting at 4:00 PM on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 until Saturday, July 17, 2010 (while supplies last).  This IPA will be drawn from a firkin and only available in the GLBC Brewpub located across from the West Side Market on Market Avenue in Cleveland (sorry, no growlers).  “Quitness” will inevitably come and go, so be sure to be there for the home opener!

The release of “Quitness” will be announced on GLBC’s website (www.greatlakesbrewing.com), Facebook page (www.facebook.com/greatlakesbrewingco) and via Twitter (www.twitter.com/GLBC_Cleveland).

Oh boy... It's another girl.

It was not even a question this morning. It's definitely another girl. While I miss out on having a little boy (for now), if the next one is anything like Jaya, I'll be a proud papa of two girls. I'm happy the girls will have each other too.

No name ideas yet. Lincolnia? So very kidding.

Lebron

Dearest Hurst.

I wept for you, Hilary and Miss Maddie when Lebron announced he was Miami bound. One of my favorite memories is riding on a train into Downtown Cleveland during a playoff night and Clevelanders getting on at every stop with Cavs jersey's saying "Rise Up" to each other. Made me realize that Cleveland was a pretty cool city.

And now I realize it's really close!! I'll figure out some time off and let's hang out! Brewery tour?

University of Michigan

So having been at my new job for a month and a half and getting to know U of Michigan staff, students and alumni...I realized something yesterday.

Dartmouth people are smart.

Dan, are you behind this?

Website looks to tout all that's good about New Jersey

TRENTON, N.J. -- Tired of boorish comments and jokes about New Jersey, residents and business people have created a website to express their Garden State pride.
The site -- JerseyDoesntStink.com -- is designed to rally those who are tired of the putdowns about pollution, wisecracks about wise guys, and cheap shots about corruption. With companion Facebook and Twitter pages, state residents can sound off online in defense of their home state.

BLD NYE

Hi all,

I think last year we may have made vague promises of hosting BLD NYE this summer, but it's just not in the cards for us this year.

Sorry for the late notice of our non-plans.

We miss all you BLDers, and we hope to see you sometime soon.

Much love, The Walshinators

My new favorite baseball columnist

Just saw this on a blog post by Chris Calcaterra of NBC Sports' Circling the Bases:

Tigers 9, Indians 8: The Tigers had no business winning this game. They trailed by four heading into their half of the eighth and they stranded eighteen (18) runners, but with the Indians' bullpen all things are possible. In this case, a bases loaded walk and then a wild pitch by Chris Perez is what was possible. Gerald Laird snapped his 0-17 to start the season, which if it had happened in Boston the city would be on lockdown. Justin Verlander said this after the game: "The Indians have a great team, and you have to make good pitches to get them out." Justin. We are men of action. Lies do not become us.

Well done, Chris.  Well done.

What the?????

So I'm posting two posts in a row...Strange?

Well not as strange as this...I'm moving to Ann Arbor Michigan in May.

Aside from the nice alliteration of that phrase I know that this will probably stir up quite a ruckus like the mention of my dog Harry. To give as much info as possible I'm also posting my note I wrote on Facebook.

And yes I will be helping to build lasers. Or at least cheering on engineers that can. =) And now...the Facebook Note:

Yep, this is not a joke. Adin is actually moving to Michigan.

Adin is seeking to finally upgrade to the level of "Business-Adin" which had first been identified as a legitimate job title whilst stroling across the D.C. mall having a heady conversation with Dan Mazzucco, Josh Papsdorf and a few others.

And by what means will this happen you might ask? Well...by building lasers of course.

And how did this happen you might ask? A former collegue got the idea that the laser building team he was on needed an Adin and so threw out the idea to the rest of his team. A resume and two interviews later Adin was offered a job.

What's the timetable? Adin is scheduled to leave Kauai on the night of May 9th. Not much time peeps...she is sorry. She will also be on the mainland from April 15-27th.

Best ways to connect with Adin before she leaves. 1) Come eat dinner at Kalaheo Cafe...she will be working there often. 2) Come to "Adin needs to get Rid of Stuff" Open House (?) She plans on showcasing everything she can't take with her to MI. Come talk story, take stuff, leave a donation. Will be at Dida and Megan's house April 29th-31st (tentatively).

She also get plans to come back visit in Sept...so no totally stress ok?

Also, Adin has to sell her car ($1500), guitar ($250), recliner ($30), wine chiller ($20). Message her if you or someone you know might be interested.

Finally...why is Adin writing in the third person? Not sure...but it's kinda funny and helps to deflect being sad about leaving so many great friends and family.

Thanks for reading. Glad you're on my journey.

Adin =)

Vox the Vote

Speaking of trustees I just happened to read all the candidate descriptions this morning. It seems that there are two camps of candidates, those nominated by the Association of Alumni and those running by petition. Of those running by petition, all candidates are a part of this "Dartmouth United" group who's main goal is to establish "parity" on the trustee board. In fact, there are a few who actually state that "parity" is the most important issue facing the college today.

Now all day long I've been rumminating over the idea that Dartmouth United = Parity, which I have to say I find very humorous as well as the idea that the most important issue facing Dartmouth College is it's lack of parity. If I'm not mistaken, I also think this Dartmouth United group is the one that raised all kinds of hoopla with a lawsuit and petition candidates the last election. The result of that election was record breaking alumni participation and a landslide victory for the AoA candidates. Histerically, some of the current Dartmouth United candidates are claiming responsibility for the increase in voter participation in the last election totally ignoring the fact that more alumni decided to vote for the first time in order to say "No" to Dartmouth United.

Needless to say I'm not going to vote for any Dartmouth United candidates unless they happen to be BLD members AND I'd much rather vote for BLD members running for State Representative.

Joe for Dartmouth?

Anyone know anything about Joe Asch '79 and his campaign for trustee?

I know nothing, and would like to be an informed alum.

Yes, I am asking you to tell me who to vote for. Or at least when the election is. And perhaps what a trustee is.

And will Joe help me reclaim the $600 in parking fines I got as a senior?

O, Canada!

If the prospect of bragging about Canada's hockey gold medal doesn't even lure Ha-Doug back to this blog, I'm not sure anything ever will...

Where are you, Doug?  Perhaps you are still busy working to perfect your online version of Family Business.

By the way, Dan, Lucky Luciano was a Jeopardy question/answer a couple weeks ago.

For the Men...

If you find yourself exhausted and stressed from a daily grind of attending meetings, dealing with whiny students/customers/etc., and caring for a growing brood of small children, I have one word for you.

Chainsaw

Today I went to Home Depot where I bought a spark plug, filters, and oil, then came home and tuned-up a hand-me-down chainsaw. After that I proceeded to cut down a pine tree along our driveway that died a few months ago.

It was glorious.

To continue the testosterone fueled escape from reality, tomorrow night we've invited some friends over and we're going to have ourselves a bonfire while drinking beer. I think we might just have to shoot some stuff while we're at it to complete the experience.

The Hills are Alive...

You thought that Adin having a dog was big news.

You thought Lincoln finally acknowledging that he is running for state office was big news (he's been campaigning since I met him).
You thought there was nothing left of creativity in BLD land.

You were wrong.

I warn you: the enclosed video will make Adin's dog act like the Harry from "Harry and the Lady Next Door." This video may single-handedly keep Lincoln out of office. This video may make you laugh and cry... but not in a good way.

Without further ado, in musical form, I express my feelings for the BLD.
Extra credit if you listen enough times to figure out the lyrics.

Can someone tell me who Harry is?

Candidate Willis

I am so behind with my comments on this blog, regrettably. But, 1) Bob McDonnell is great, as is Virginia, 2) Merry Christmas, 3) Happy Thanksgiving, and 4) I definitely fear the Rooney. And, huge congrats to the Papsdorfs!! Keep us updated!

The past few weeks have been a bit overwhelming--Lincoln is running for the DE House of Representatives! Here is a link to his first press release:

http://www.scsuntimes.com/ (search for "Lincoln" and the article should come up)

It is very exciting and I am definitely proud of Lincoln for making the decision to run. He already has a lot of support and some impressive campaign literature (some of which I helped with last night until 1:30--I am never touching a "mail merge" again.) He has his committee in place and a kickoff event lined up, so the campaign is off to a great start.

Who wants to donate their kids to appear with us on the campaign trail? We could work out some sort of rotation. By my count, there are 19(.5) BLD kiddies, and all are amazing. :) Hopefully we will be adding to them before too long!

A lawyer, a car dealer, and a politician...

Howdy, Guv'nor

I was interested to hear that the response to the state of the union would be given by the governor of Virginia.

I was disappointed to discover that it wasn't Kevin.

Keeping Up with the Mazzuccos

Another little Papsdorf will be making an appearance around the end of July!

We thought about calling everyone. We thought about sending cute Christmas cards announcing the news (and then didn't send any cards at all). We thought about sending an email.

But we are tired and, once you have three, no one is really that surprised by a fourth. Right?

One of these days I'll have a nice ultrasound picture to post on our blog, but for now you just have to take our word for it.

Christmas Mail and Happy New Years.

So I'm just posting to let you all know that I have finally gotten to my Christmas mail and the BLD blog.

You all look great.

And Black Dynamic will soon be on my Netflix queue.
