Homeland Security

"Have you ever been an officer or a member or made a contribution to an organization dedicated to the violent overthrow of the United States Government and which engages in illegal activities to that end, knowing that the organization engages in such activities with the specific intent to further such activities?"

This is the question I get asked as I strive to obtain Federal Security Clearance to be able to man-the-door at a security conference room that we have at my office.

Now really...even if I remotely happened to be Al-Qaeda...would I answer "yes"?

Americans are smart!

I think the chance are pretty good that this blog is now being monitored by the NSA.

I wonder if there's a satellite lens zooming in on my house now?

Does it make me stupid that I can't follow that whole question? Because it seems to me that Rob could answer yes. He's been an officer.

It just reminds me an awful lot of the legal writing that Jay does--you read all the way to the end and think, "WHAT IN THE HELL DID I JUST READ?"

Jon, I'm not sure how to interpret that.

I'm not usually one to defend THE MAN, but I think there is an explanation for this question. It may be more difficult to convict someone of some specific crime linked to terrorist activities, so you might have a hard time getting a terrorist fired from a security job. However, if they have testified under penalty of perjury that they aren't a terrorist, then it might be easier to convict them of perjury. Similar to putting Al Capone away for tax evasion rather than bootlegging, racketeering, and illegal gambling.

On the smaller scale, it may be easier to fire someone if they have lied on their application, rather than have to prove that they had specific ill intent as a security guard.

So, some Americans are not as stupid as they seem. It must be impossible for some to be as stupid as they seem.
